WHAT IS SYNTHETIC SPIDER SILK?

Since it is not feasible to harvest large quantities of naturally produced silk from spider webs, Dr. Randy Lewis and his team of researchers at Utah State University are finding ways to create fibers using "synthetically" derived spider proteins. These proteins, which have the same amino acid composition and sequences as naturally occurring spider silk, are being produced through transgenic E. coli bacteria, silk worms and goats. Once these proteins have been produced, proprietary processes turn the spider silk proteins into strands of synthetic spider silk.
